The Walls We've Built

Some people go through things that cause them to put up a wall—full self-defense mode, guns ablaze. For some, this may last months, and for others, years.
This can be a tricky situation because the Bible does tell us to guard our hearts. But the question becomes: to what extent?
There are many reasons why someone might build walls—anxiety, depression, trauma, heartbreak, abuse, or infidelity. These are just a few difficult experiences that can lead someone to protect themselves. What many people don’t realize is that the same walls built for protection may also keep them from one of the best things God wants to bring into their lives. God didn’t create us to live in isolation. He created us for community and to further His kingdom.
I’ve spoken to people who make it clear—through their words, demeanor, and emotions—that they have strong walls built up. It shows in their decisions and in the way they interact with others. I’m not minimizing the reasons they have for building those walls. I’ve experienced some of these things myself, and I’ve built walls too. It was only through prayer and a genuine relationship with God that I was able to break them down.
Again, don’t get me wrong—guarding your heart is important. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Let’s break this down.
What does it mean to guard your heart?
Guarding your heart isn’t only about romantic relationships, although that’s often where people apply it first. When God tells us to guard our hearts, He’s calling us to be mindful of what we allow to enter. What music or movies are we letting influence us? What conversations or environments are we consuming? Do we really want our hearts filled with these things? We should desire hearts filled with what honors and glorifies God.
How do I know when I can tear the walls down?
Pray for discernment and wisdom. The Lord will reveal the path you should take. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
On the other side of vulnerability is life, love, and freedom. Don’t let past experiences keep you from what God has for you. I pray that the Lord free your heart from the things that have you bound.
